Hello everyone!
During my last stay in Brazil, which was longer than usual, about 5 months, the sport I practiced most was skateboarding. I wanted to spend more time with my nephews, so I decided to look for a skateboarding school for them. Unfortunately, I found nothing well-organized in Rio de Janeiro. But I asked around, found a great teacher who started teaching them, and I ended up jumping on the bandwagon too!
Teacher Bia is an example of resilience. She learned to skateboard at 48, but she’s 55 now and is a great performer. By my third lesson, I stopped dropping off on my own and started riding the surfskate, which has a very loose front truck and, with movements similar to surfing, accelerates the board, and allows for tight turns on walls. The Carver brand is one of the most developed on the market.
Despite my apprehension about falling on the concrete floor, with the use of protection, I gained confidence and fell in love with the sport! Surfing the bowl walls is a great feeling, and it’s also excellent snowboarding training.
The skateboarding moves are very similar to those used in snowboarding. For me, they’re more demanding, because your feet are free from the board and the speed generated on wheels is greater than on snow. So you really have to be on the base of a small board, with no room for error.
That’s it, off to another winter season in Chile, and hoping for snow soon in the central zone, our training base. And, of course, I’m dying to discover new skate parks there!
See you later!
